"I worked as a DJ for 23 years for a Swiss public service radio. I have received hundreds of albums from the local scene. I naively thought that nothing could surprise me again until I was contacted by Mayzar Zarnadar. The first thing that struck me when listening to his work was the search for grain. We immediately feel very organic textures. Zarathustra is a project that has its roots in black American music while mixing various influences. It feels like a 21st century blaxploitation film blending Jazz, Soul, Rap as well as more electronic sounds. In short, it's an atypical, unclassifiable, indescribable album and that's precisely what makes it so unique. This music cannot be explained, it can be listened to. It will definitely be for me, the most beautiful Swiss discovery of 2021"

(...) ZARATHUSTRA takes on important questions about the music industry itself: what does it mean to be a “lead” musician today? What goes into the performativity and perception of success and stardom? And what does this share with older (sociological questions) about charismatic authority and spiritual leadership? By drawing upon (and reinventing) the historical figure of Zarathustra, an Iranian prophet who founded Zorastrianism in the 6th century BCE, Mazyar’s project is at once an act of myth making, historical investigation, speculative fiction and cultural commentary on our contemporary moment. Self-described as a Hip-Hop project, ZARATHUSTRA’s first album Black Sun (2021) is an impressive multi-lingual and cross-cultural meditation on power and authority in our highly globalized and highly unequal society."
